Chapter 16

I took a scoop of kibble up to the attic for Whisk. Standing among all the clutter, I called for him, then jumped when he rubbed against the back of my leg.

“Hey, pal, I brought your dinner.”

I poured his food into the bowl, and he eyed it before turning his face up to mine as if to say, “That’s it? That’s what you’re going to feed me?”

“I called the vet and that’s what he recommended,” I explained to the cat as if he could understand me.

Whisk sauntered away, disappearing among all the boxes and furniture. The attic held so many odds and ends along with cartons full of things I didn’t know what to do with. Maybe I’d have a yard sale, but not until after the grand opening was out of the way.

But what to do with the papers and documents that had come with the house? One of these days, I’d have to sort through them all to make sure there wasn’t anything important before shredding them.

I reached into the box Whisk had been curled up in before. He’d seemed so protective of its contents. What a silly thought. I pulled out some of the papers, quickly scanning them. Some looked worthless, like an ad for a dry cleaner and an old newspaper. One of them appeared to be a legal document, a deed, printed on yellowed, fragile paper. The address was 249 Elm Street. I’d passed by Elm but couldn’t remember whether the buildings there were businesses or homes.

I dug through the rest of the papers and pulled out a file labeled tax returns. Looking inside, I saw several years from 1958 through 1960. The restaurant had been open during that time, and I took a glance at the income and expenses shown. It would be interesting to see how profitable the restaurant had once been.

Then I recognized something that gave me a thrill. A menu for Maison Rose, the restaurant that had once occupied the first floor of my home. I couldn’t wait to show that to my friends. I took the deed and the tax returns to review later when I had some time to kill, though I didn’t anticipate that would be anytime soon.

“See you later, Whisk.”

The cat reappeared, looking disappointed that I hadn’t yet returned with a more suitable dinner. He watched me walk down the attic stairs. I put the deed and tax return in the desk drawer in my office and took the menu downstairs to show Jennifer.

“Hey, check this out.” Finding her in the kitchen making a sandwich, I asked, “Is that what you’re having for dinner?”

“Yeah, I thought I’d heat up some soup to go with it if that’s okay.”

“Great idea. I’ll join you.”

We had enough soup in the walk-in freezer to feed us for months, so I retrieved a frozen block and put it in a saucepan to heat up while I made a grilled cheese sandwich to go with it. Grilled cheese with a bowl of soup was one of my top ten favorite comfort foods.
